Notes: Château de La Rochefoucauld is La Rochefoucauld in the Charente. In 2013, after more than a thousand years of occupation, the castle still belongs to La Rochefoucauld in the person of Francis, the 19th named, 15th Duke, who inherited the castle in 1972 by his grandfather. According to legend, the castle is haunted by the spirit of the fairy Melusine, who threw herself from the top of the keep, or the souls of the founding family. This is the most imposing castle of Charente and Renaissance jewels. La Rochefoucauld family has retained the keep during all periods of expansion and reconstruction of the castle as a witness to the antiquity of their house.
